Disproportionate US Reaction

What?

"The U.S. Coast Guard fired a warning shot at an Iranian fishing boat in the Persian Gulf Tuesday after the Iranian vessel pointed a machine gun at a Coast Guard boat, according to the Navy."

But they just aimed.  They didn't shoot?  So disproportionate.

P.S.

The Monomoy was operating on "a routine maritime security operation"

What U.S. coast is there in that area of the world?  To quote a friend:

Whose coast are they guarding?

Coasties have been patrolling the Persian Gulf since the late 1990s. They were originally deployed there because of their expertise with the “visit, board, search, and seizure” mission, which was exercised repeatedly during the years of sanctions on Saddam. Over time, they came to fill in for some of the missions the OHP-class frigates performed. We’ve been phasing the frigates out. Now there’s a Coast Guard “cutter” in the Gulf probably 6-8 months out of the year. (The Coast Guard calls it a “cutter,” but it’s frigate size and deploys with a helicopter.) They work the Somalia anti-piracy mission too.
